About Leadership Flight School


At Bartell & Bartell, our mission is to help organizations reach new leadership heights by unleashing the potential their people to optimize organizational health. Leadership Flight School does just that – it provides the tools you need to improve your leadership  and inspire followers. Leadership Flight School teaches the fundamentals of leadership, and how to apply them in real situations. In this 3 ½ day session, you’ll learn how to become a leader, and how to create change in your team or organization every day.

Dr. Rod Bartell is the Founder and Executive Director of Bartell & Bartell, Ltd. He is an executive coach and mentor to numerous executives and leaders, and continues to serve as an Instructor and Diagnostic Expert in Bartell’s own Leadership Flight School™.

Dr. Bill Brashers, Bartell & Bartell Ltd.’s Director of Development Services is a distinguished Organizational Psychologist specializing in adult development issues in organizations. Bill has been involved in the professional assessment and development of thousands of key organizational leaders, executives, supervisors, and teams throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico and serves as a the Dean of Bartell’s Leadership Flight School™.

Shawn Ishler, is Bartell & Bartell Ltd.’s Director of Client Services.  He is a lead instructor in Leadership Flight School™. Shawn’s pragmatic, hands-on approach to training and development uses down to earth examples and clear objectives. He challenges participants to set their own specific goals and to constantly seek continuous improvement both personally and professionally.

Helpful Support

We understand that work will continue even if you’re not there, so we offer free WiFi and are happy to help with anything you may need. There are several short breaks throughout each day and a full hour at lunch, so you can tend to your business as needed.

Quality Refreshments

We always have hot coffee and water for tea, plenty of water and a variety of other drinks and snacks. Fresh baked goods are available at breakfast, and we fully cater each lunch as a true meal. If you have any special dietary needs, we’ll do our best to accommodate those as well. You won’t go hungry!

Nestled in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, the Bartell state of the art training facility is the home of The Bartell Leadership Flight School program.

Your leadership training is only minutes away from The Pennsylvania State University. Penn State’s campus provides our visitors with world-class museums, sports and entertainment. While in Happy Valley, be sure to check out the area’s many local eateries, stroll the campus, see a concert or show at the Bryce Jordan Center or catch a college football or basketball game.

State College, PA and the surrounding areas are full of natural beauty. Centre County is world renowned for some of the best fly fishing in the country. When the weather is warm, some of our Flight School attendees will spend an evening hiking Mt.Nittany or golfing. In the winter months, there is local skiing, snowboarding and tubing.

State College is a safe, entertaining and family-friendly town. Please let us know if you are planning to bring your family with you. We would be glad to help you make your week a vacation that everyone will enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dress code?
Business casual. Be comfortable and ready to work hard. Men typically wear slacks, button-down or polo shirts. Ties are not necessary. Women typically wear blouses and skirts or trousers.
What time do you start on Day 1?
We begin at 8:00 a.m., but our doors are open by 7:45 so you have time to get coffee and refreshments.
What time does the session end?
The first 3 days we will end around 5:00 p.m. On the final day, we end at 12:00 noon.
What is the closest airport?
University Park Airport in State College (SCE) is a 15-minute drive from the Bartell training facility. If you’d prefer to fly into a larger airport, the following are within reasonable driving distance:




Harrisburg (MDT) — 2.0 hours away

Philadelphia (PHL) — 4.0 hours away

Pittsburgh (PIT) — 3.5 hours away

Baltimore (BWI) — 3.5 hours away

Which hotels would you recommend?
We recommend the Courtyard By Marriott or the Residence Inn. Both hotels are less than 5 minutes from our facilities and offer special rates for our guests.

What about food?
For breakfast, we will provide an assortment of pastries and piece fruit along with coffee, hot water for tea or hot chocolate, and juice. We will have lunch catered on Days 1 – 3. We also have plenty of snacks available throughout the day – you won’t go hungry this week! If you have any dietary restrictions or special needs, please let us know. We strive to make you comfortable, and will do our best to accommodate.




While we do not provide dinner or lunch on the final day, there are many restaurants around the area and some that have partnered with us to provide you with discounted meals. We can recommend different venues based on your preferences, so please don’t hesitate to ask!

Will I get the results of my assessment while I am there?
Yes, as part of your Leadership Flight School package, you will receive your assessment portfolio when you arrive on Day 1. We are at your service during Flight School, so if you have any questions about your results, feel free to talk with us at lunch or on a break.
How do I get the HRCI and/or SHRM credits?
Following the class, we will send you the information required to apply your credits toward re-certification.
Can I get the HRCI and/or SHRM credits for a past class?
Unfortunately, prior to August 2016, no classes may have credits retroactively applied. However, if you need any documentation of your Leadership Flight School completion (a signed letter, an electronic copy of your certificate, etc.), please contact us and we will be happy to help.
